At St Mary’s Infant School we have had an elected School Council of 8 -12 children (children from the Rainbow Class join in the Spring Term) since 2008.
The purpose of the School Council is to help our children to have a greater say over matters that affect their school and wider lives.
One boy and one girl from each class meet fortnightly with the INCo and a teaching assistant. The School Council governor also attends some meetings. Minutes from meetings are displayed in the dining room.
Pupil voice within school has impacted on whole school improvement in many ways – for example, children had a say in the choice of new outdoor play equipment, the naming of our new ‘Calm Room’ and what to put in it, and what to include in a whole school ‘Respect for All Charter’. The School Council also interviewed candidates for the headship role in March 2012.
School Council children have helped to man a stall at the Christmas and Summer Fairs for a number of years.
All children are encouraged to contribute their ideas for topics for discussion in the Suggestions Box in the entrance area.
